EPA Webcast #1: Communicating the Connection between Climate Change and Heat Health
This summer, EPA’s Local Climate and Energy Program will be hosting a two-part webcast series on the connections among climate change, the heat island effect, and public health. As temperatures rise due to climate change, the heat island effect (which causes built-up areas to be hotter than surrounding areas) is exacerbated, leading to increases in heat-related illnesses, deaths, and other health problems. This series will address both the short-term response needs that local governments face during heat waves and longer-term strategies for reducing the heat island effect in the future
CicLAvia Pasadena
Pasadena has played host to parades, bike races and music festivals, and for the first time is opening its streets to the largest car-free open streets event in America. CicLAvia – Pasadena Presented by Metrotakes place from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31. The city will lend its own charm and flair to CicLAvia as participants travel along Colorado Boulevard, and down side streets to parks and historic architecture using foot, pedal and non-motorized wheel power. Go Metro to CicLAvia, the event route will connect to the Memorial and Del Mar the Metro Gold Line Stations enabling participants to have a car-free or car-lite day.

Net Zero Energy Buildings: The Future is Now
“Net zero energy buildings” is the latest buzz phrase in the building community, but who has built one and how do we get to zero? This session gathers a stellar panel of speakers (listed below) to share several short 18 minute “TED style” case studies on successful high performance NZE buildings with information shared on the energy conservation measures (ECM’s) employed on each project. Other discussion topics include: curbing consumption, increasing efficiency, driving occupant behavior, and the relationship between NZE buildings and green building rating systems including LEED and the Living Building Challenge.
